DAY COURSES
M.I.I.L.A.’s core programs are ESL and FSL courses.
Our groups are small (6 to 10 students), therefore you can be sure to learn better! The curriculum of each class has been designed by our experienced teachers and a team of professionals. All our teachers have a university background and at least a TESL certificate. All our staff members have 5 to 10 years experience working with international students. Our comprehensive teaching methods allow you to better learn the foreign language. Effective coaching, mentoring and clear feedback help you to more accurately understand your strengths and weaknesses.
At M.I.I.L.A., we are focused on helping you master the language skills so that when you go back to your home country, you will be proud of having chosen to study with us in Montreal. During your study period, we provide you with ongoing feedback about your improvements. We keep in mind that our students' success guarantees our success as a team!
There are 9 levels, from Beginner (1-2-3) to Intermediate (1-2-3) to Advanced (1-2-3). The language courses are offered at different intensities and depending on your level, your classes will be in the morning or in the afternoon. Please see below:
| Intensities | Hrs/week | Hrs/day | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part-Time | 15 | 3 | Monday to Friday |
| Regular | 22.5 | 4.5 | Monday to Friday |
| Intensive | 30 | 6 | Monday to Friday |
| Intensities | Possible schedules |
|---|---|
| Part-Time | choose 15 hrs of courses per week |
| Regular | 9:00am to 1:30pm OR 1:30pm to 6:00pm |
| Intensive | 9:00am to 3:00pm OR 12:00pm to 6:00pm |
All schedules include 2 breaks of 10 minutes each.
Part-Time:
If you work during the day or do not want to study full-time, this program is custom-made for you. Usually, you select the part of the Regular class that you would like to attend, for a total of 15 hours per week. Depending on your level, your schedule may be in the morning or in the afternoon, from Monday to Friday. However, Part-Time schedules can be discussed and adjusted on a case-by-case basis, as each of you may have different needs and interests (i.e. grammar, conversation, etc...) or different availabilities (i.e. Monday to Thursday only). Do not hesitate to let us know exactly what parts of your language skills you wish to improve.
Regular:
The Regular schedule is a popular choice among international students. This program includes grammar and conversation (listening-speaking-reading-writing) courses from Monday to Friday. Depending on your level, you may have classes in the morning or in the afternoon. This program will help you improve your language skills through a variety of activities, games, practical exercices, additional workshops and real life situations.
Intensive:
If you wish to improve your language skills much faster or if your stay in Montreal is a short one, this program is meant for you. It combines the Regular schedule from Monday to Friday and a selection of various workshops and electives. The Intensive program is really designed to help you master your new language skills.
If you choose the Intensive schedule, extra (elective) courses will be added to your Regular schedule in order for you to go from 22.5 to 30 hours per week.
Currently, these elective courses are:
| Levels | Name of electives * | |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Beginner 1 | N/A** |
| Level 2 | Beginner 2 | N/A** |
| Level 3 | Beginner 3 | Public Speaking |
| Level 4 | Intermediate 1 | Idioms & Slang |
| Level 5 | Intermediate 2 | International & Local Current Events |
| Level 6 | Intermediate 3 | Business English |
| Level 7 | Advanced 1 | Media & Advertising Studies |
| Level 8 | Advanced 2 | The Tourism Industry: How to Sell a Dream |
| Level 9 | Advanced 3 | Challenges of this New Millenium |
* Please note that a minimum number of students may be required to start these specific elective classes.
** Please note that given their very basic knowledge of English/French, there is no elective courses for level 1 and 2 Beginner students. If you are a Beginner 1 or 2 student and wish to attend Intensive courses, it is possible and also very much recommended, as the Intensive schedule is meant to learn faster. In that case, the elective course will be replaced by more grammar and/or conversation workshops, or by any workshop suiting best your needs.
M.I.I.L.A. offers you the possibility to start on any Monday but it is strongly recommended to start on an official start date. A session lasts 4 weeks and one level can be completed in 4 or 8 weeks, depending on the language chosen and on your ability to master the skills. You may have short tests and quizzes once in a while during the first 3 weeks of your session. The 4th week is generally called the "exam week", and you will have to pass several exams (written tests, interviews with the teachers, presentations in class) in order to evaluate your language skills. You will be notified before the last day of the session whether you may pass to the next level.
Please note that international students cannot register for Part-Time courses from outside Canada if they plan to apply for a Study Permit. If you are an international student and wish to apply for a Study Permit, you need to be studying full-time (Regular or Intensive programs only).
